What is the Young Imagineers competition?

Statoil and the Science Museum have teamed up to create a nationwide competition for children aged 7-14, called Young Imagineers.  The competition has been devised to inspire and engage more young people in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The competition asks young people simply: “What one invention would you create to make tomorrow’s world a better place?” 

How do I enter the Young Imagineers competition?

To enter the competition, you need to download the entry form provided on the Young Imagineers website;  www.youngimagineers.statoil.com and submit your idea through the website.

Do I need a parent’s permission to enter the competition?

Yes, you will need to obtain a parent or legal guardian’s permission to participate in the competition.

Do I have to be of a certain age to enter?

Yes, you must be 7-14 years old to enter the Young Imagineers competition.

When can I enter?

You will be able submit your entry to the competition using the online portal provided between the 4-week period beginning Monday 11 September 2017 and closing Friday 6 October at 17:00 BST.

Do I have to pay to enter the competition?

No, the Young Imagineers competition is free to enter.

Can I enter if I live overseas?

The competition is open to UK, Isle of Man and Channel Island residents only.

What do I have to do to enter?

To enter, simply download the entry form provided at www.youngimagineers.statoil.com, complete it by drawing a sketch of your invention and accompany it with up to 100 words explaining what the invention is.

How do I submit my entry?

After completing your form please scan or photograph the entry form and submit a digital copy using the online portal at www.youngimagineers.statoil.com by Friday 6 October at 17:00 BST.

Can I enter with a friend?

Yes, you can enter with a friend as a pair. However, if an entry is made as a pair, you cannot then submit an individual entry as well.

What will my design be judged on?

Your design will be judged on imagination and creativity.

What happens if I get shortlisted?

If you are one of ten entrants shortlisted, you will be invited to share your idea in person with our panel at the Science Museum in central London on Saturday 18 November 2017.

What will happen at the Young Imagineers day in November?

The Young Imagineers event on Saturday 18 November will be a day packed full of live science entertainment, at which shortlisted attendees will be asked to spend a few minutes sharing your idea with both our judges and a live audience seated in the Science Museum’s Hans Rausing Lecture Theatre.

How will I know if I’ve been shortlisted?

All shortlisted entrants will be notified week commencing 15 October 2017 either by telephone or email.  Shortlisting to ten entries will be conducted by the Science Museum and Statoil- all decisions are final. If you are shortlisted, you will need to confirm you are happy to have been shortlisted by Friday 20 October at 17:00 BST. The shortlisted entrants will be publicly announced in the week commencing 23 October 2017.

What happens after I have been shortlisted?

Each shortlisted entrant will be offered a Skype session with a professional designer lasting no more than 30 minutes; the designer will take any further detail of the entrant’s idea provided and then deliver a designed interpretation of that idea in time for the Young Imagineers live day on Saturday 18 November 2017.

If I am shortlisted, how will I get to London and where will I stay?

A member of the Young Imagineers team will contact you to ensure all of your travel (and accommodation if applicable) arrangements are made in advance of the final.

When will the winner be announced?

The winner will be announced at the Young Imagineers Live event on Saturday 18 November 2017, at the Science Museum in central London.

What is the prize?

The prize for the winner consists of:

a. An interpretation of the winning idea produced and exhibited inside the Science Museum for a minimum of one month, installed in early 2018.

b. One bespoke-designed experience day at the Science Museum in London, on a date to be mutually agreed by the Science Museum, Statoil and the winner in early 2018. 

c. Annual family pass to Wonderlab: The Statoil Gallery at the Science Museum in London for one year running from January 1st 2018 – December 31st 2018.

d. 50 copies of the book This Book Think’s You’re a Scientist for the winner or winning pair’s school(s).
